Barcelona and Lionel Messi have held “very positive” talks over a new contract, ESPN reports.

The club’s president, Joan Laporta, has already held a meeting with Messi’s father and agent.

The 33-year-old has a first informal proposal on the table from Barca.

The proposal contains the money the Catalans are ready to pay Messi to continue at the Camp Nou beyond this summer.

However, Messi wants to wait and see the club’s sporting project before making a decision.

It is believed Laporta planned to offer Messi a two-year contract with an option to extend it an additional year, to compensate for the wage reduction that the Barca captain would have to accept.
